Sunday 14th of June 2009. A lovely Summer’s day, with blue skies and puffy white clouds. Perfect for an airshow. Perfect, in fact for Royal Air Force Cosford to hold its annual big aviation event.

The Airshow was made very special by the 2009 public debut of the AVRO Vulcan. This was the first appearance of the recently restored aircraft at Cosford for 17 years. The intense interest in the Vulcan combined with the superb summer weather made this event a sell-out with 58,000 spectators attending.

The weather came up trumps for Abingdon’s tenth anniversary show; crystal clear air and beautiful fluffy clouds so our high-definition cameras captured some breathtaking images.

An RAF C17 flyby and landing for static display astonished everyone with airborne and ground agility surpassed only by its spirited departure later. At the opposite end of the power and weight scale Guy Westgate (with our cockpit camera) did the same with his Swift glider.

More RAF support came from the Tutor, Hawk and the Chinook. The powerful twin-rotor heavy-lifter performed an extraordinary routine.

The Sunderland International Airshow is one of Europe’s biggest and it’s free!

It takes place on the seafront at Seaburn and always attracts a big crowd; not just families looking for a day out and hoping to see regulars like The Red Arrows and Falcons Parachute Team but enthusiasts too drawn by rare appearances by Merlin, Apache and fast jets from Europe.

This year the star for everyone was the newly restored Vulcan bomber tearing the sky apart with its spine-tingling ‘howl’.

Priceless historic gems share the sky with modern military machines and some of the UK’s most gifted pilots showcase breathtaking aerobatics in one of the biggest airshows in the UK. Crown all that with the eagerly anticipated return of the Vulcan and the iconic sight of the Virgin Atlantic 747 in formation with the Red Arrows – all in fabulous clear weather - and you have a truly classic event. The Royal Air Force, the Royal Navy and the Army Air Corps all supported in strength. Even the USAF mustered a rarely seen KC-135 tanker.

Despite a dire weather forecast, Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton’s Air Day 2009 attracted a capacity crowd to see the Royal Navy celebrate 100 years of aircraft operation and an impressive series of displays.

Fortunately the worst of the weather held off and the 2 big set pieces, the big formation fly-by and the Commando Assault went on almost to plan.

To a cavalcade of regular displays add rare appearances like the Dassault Rafale, key historic types including the Sea Vixen and Seafire and almost every current navy type appearing at some point during the day.

2008 was an extraordinary year for British Airshows and will be remembered for some extreme weather conditions.

Each year RAF Waddington plays host to one of the biggest airshows in the UK. The undoubted highlight in 2008 was the return to the airshow scene of Avro Vulcan XH558. This program includes the Vulcan’s emotional return to Waddington and practise display before the event, as well as the aircraft’s main display and formation flypast with the Avro Lancaster.

The RAF Role Demonstration also provided a thrilling spectacle and material from onboard the E3D, Tornado F3s, Chinook and Apache add to the excitement.
