I was priviledged enough to serve on Two Sqdn ( Jag ) and one of our pilots was an ex Lightning display pilot Sqdn Ldr Pete Chapman who described the Lightning as the only manned missile on the RAF's inventory . Other descriptions were TWO engines and me an American description was " 19 tonnes of all aluminum death tube " . Whatever the Raf has yet to take an aircraft on charge that can match it for it's charisma. I will forever stand in awe at watching a pair come out of the QRA shed and from brakes off to 30,000ft in 3 minutes flat will that ever be matched? I think not. This nanny state will take a lot of persuading I am afraid to allow a frightning to fly again in civvy hands one of the reasons being it's very high approach speed of 180knts not so much a landing more of a controlled crash ( arrival )they were also renowned leakers and very prone to wet starts when Avpin was used. " Dont run away unless you see an armourer running then make sure your not behind him."
i was there that day i was trying to record it on a camera what i had and i dropped it by accident and i broke all of the lense i was just wondering ifanybody could maybe send me a dvd of it please because i'm a big fan of it and lightnings of course and i would love to see it on dvd of it's not to much trouble if anybody could send a copy of it i'd really respect that and my dad's a big fan aswell and would love to see it.thanks

nice to see the lightning still around ..but lets not forget the issues the mighty vulcan still faces and the red tape ...fair enough let there be stringent safety rules ...but please lets not over do it at the risk of the young aircraft fanatics who may have never seen these jets fly .....we seem to be giving up on all our past achievments of which the uk was out in front as far as flight was concerned ..give these guys a break ..let the lightning fly again

The red tape really isn't very surprising: it would be quite embarassing to see an aircraft that outperforms anything in the current RAF inventory flying under civilian control.
I hope they'll keep trying. The Lightning stands as a tribute to the British aircraft industry that created it, and deserves to be seen where it belongs- in the air!
Thunder city in South africa is the only place to see lightnings fly, the CAA do not like complicated machinery like this flying in civvy hands here, go to Bruntingthorpe and visit the 2 lightnings there and see them at CLOSE quarters doing full power runs...awesome.....Mark

Re: Fast landing.
Most aircraft approach the runway touchdown point at an angle of 3degrees. Lightnings approached at 2.5degrees.
Great fun controlling those aircraft.
Ex RAF Binbrook Air Traffic Controller... Was I once, in the mists of time.

Such a shame that one of these beasts isn't gracing our skies anymore.
everyone should contribute
everyone should contribute to bruntingthorpe lightning preservation group for the great work their
doing in keeping these babies aernoutical air worthy come the day they get to fly again lets not
see the same difficulties as the vulcan ,50 euros sees these babies housed in a good
conditions .

Fast landing.
is it me, or is that a very high speed landing? I've never seen one as fast as that, awesome plane.

Pretty much zero I'm afraid
Pretty much zero I'm afraid Craig.
There's a good thread about the aircraft on the Key Forum at the moment: Lightning XR724.
Its also worth reading recent discussion on this thread with regard to a flying Lightning in the UK: QRA Shed and Lighting News
